It takes a lot of nerve—or something that can’t be printed here—to name your rat poison after the animals that so effectively and efficiently control rodents but that are also being poisoned—as “non target” animals—by your product. Syngenta warns that “Talon” is “hazardous to dogs, cats, pigs, poultry and other wildlife.”

Cats would be the next. They are much more independent and still behave similarly to wild cats they are still pets and rely on humans to survive. Would suprisngly rodents and small animals. From the ones that have a good chance to survive.

For instance, assume (and I will NOT stand by this number, it is just one I’ve heard here and there) that kitty cats in America kill 50,000,000 birds a year. Hardly any Sandhill Cranes are killed by domestic (including ferrel domestic) cats. In fact, there are certainly a few cats killed by hawks every year. Raptors either.

A wildlife rehabilitator friend, newly licensed, recently called to ask if he could feed a recovering Turkey Vulture anything besides defrosted rodents. As long as they had no drugs in their system, and as long as they weren’t touched by a cat (and thus contaminated with salmonella/pasteurella/Bartonella, etc.) He ate my last quail.

A recent meta study ( The impact of free-ranging domestic cats on wildlife of the United States ) that applied strict inclusion criteria and some fancy statistics estimates that 2.4 billion birds, plus or minus more than a billion, are killed by cats every year in the US.
