This despite a dry market for seal products and a warming climate that is hurting the species? Really, Canada? The market for Canadian seal pelts has gone dry but the federal government will still allow sealers to kill 400,000 of the marine mammals when the annual hunt opens next Monday.

Rancho Naturalista Lodge, Costa Rica, or in the Land of Coffee and Chocolate

Into the souvenir shop for some local coffee, chocolate and cocoa, then a coffee mug with an image of a Three-toed Sloth and the Field Guide to the Mammals of Costa Rica, and off we go. Coming to Costa Rica, I needed only a few dozen species to cross my first big threshold: a thousand species. My OCD would not stand that!

Big Year Birding Update

Josh Vandermeulen is sitting pretty at 317 species for the year in Ontario, only 21 off the province’s record of 338, set by Glen Coady in 1996. Blake and Holly Wright are hoping to photograph 400 species in the lower 48 this year and have managed to make it to 351 thus far. It’s quite a list! Let us know in the comments.

As with mammals, the avifauna of the tar pits is heavy on individuals from predatory and scavenging species who were perhaps drawn to the struggles of dying mammoths and ground sloths. Many are what we’d expect to see today: Mallards and Canada Geese. Condors, of course. Golden Eagle and coyote fossils.
