Into the souvenir shop for some local coffee, chocolate and cocoa, then a coffee mug with an image of a Three-toed Sloth and the Field Guide to the Mammals of Costa Rica, and off we go. Young birds, at least in captivity, become mature after 5 years and start breeding after 6 or 7 years. My OCD would not stand that!

Beehler set himself a lofty goal – following the spring songbird migration in the United States from the Gulf of Mexico all the way to the boreal forests of Canada and in the process seeing all thirty-seven species of eastern-breeding wood warblers, from Common Yellowthroat to Kirtland’s Warbler , on their respective breeding grounds.

Other species have certainly expanded their ranges, but never in such a rapid and global scale. The Cattle Egret is native to Africa, where it is a familiar sight among herds of large mammals. For reasons that are not quite clear, this species underwent a massive range expansion. This species is primarily an insectivore.

The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. The Louisiana black bear’s threatened status warrants protection under sections 7 and 9 of the Endangered Species Act.

In light of this horrible incident, is it right for the zoo to carry on a breeding program that subjects more animals to such unnatural lives? Michelle Nadon, Aurora, Canada To the editor: Bars? Many sanctuaries do not permit breeding. The zoo, surely, carries responsibility for deficiencies in its enclosure.

Predators that rely on lemmings, like the Snowy Owl , took advantage of the bounty and had great breeding success, raising large broods which, after the lemming population crashes, dispersed far and wide. And while I haven’t made it over their yet I hope to before they disperse into breeding territories.

They breed up here, and spend their winters (usually) in the lower reaches of the Arctic and near polynyas (year round ice free waters) such as the North Water Polynya between Ellesmere Island and Groenland. They are able to breed at the age of 5-6 weeks so it is easy to see, given the right conditions how quickly their population can grow.
