My visit on Saturday morning was meant to be a quick stop to scan the ducks, geese, and gulls to see if anything interesting was around. The Ruddy Ducks looked miserable but the grebe and the coots seemed to be doing fine. Such a cold Ruddy Duck. Ring-necked Ducks have great eyes. I kind of felt bad for him.

My pre-breakfast list was wildfowl dominated, the 10 species I saw ranging from Black-necked Swans to the endemic Falkland Islands Flightless Steamer Duck. The latter are great bruisers of ducks, built like a small battle ship. With bulk like that, it’s no wonder that they gave up flying long ago.

Barnacle Goose is my choice for the next bird, because we discovered one lone bird among all of the hundreds of Canada Geese , Greylag Geese and Eurasian Wigeon at Freiston Shore and it was as if it was a test to see if we would notice “the odd one out”! Lema Ranch has several ponds and is always a great spot for waterfowl but I was surprised to find four Snow Geese on secluded pond! The ranch’s ponds yielded several Ring-necked Ducks … large numbers of American Wigeon … several Bufflehead … and Pied-billed Grebes. Wild Turkeys were out in full display.

Above are Canada Goose goslings. The first few years for female ducks and geese are kind of practice rounds. Experienced Canada geese will corral young from less experienced females and you’ll find rafts of 20 goslings tended by a four adults–safety in large numbers.

Down in the water, I added Common Goldeneyes, Common Mergansers, Canada Geese , and yes, don’t laugh…my first Mallards of the year. This extremely common duck, just never comes to Mexico. On the Drive into the area, a local flooded field had 400 Snow Geese , and couple of Sandhill Cranes.

Stretching over the water, big boughs dangled their flowers below, so a passerby literally had to duck their heads to avoid the bloom. Across the bridge, my eyes wandered from the white marble columns of the Memorial to a pair of ducks twenty or thirty feet from the edge of the path. Weather is weird.

Out on one of the rocks that were visible during low tide, a small group of Harlequin Ducks had gathered. A pair Bald Eagles were doing fly-bys over our heads , and there were Belted Kingfishers, Canada Geese , A pair of Mallards, and three Great Blue Herons. Here is one of them standing in the kelp.

The focus of the trip was ducks and we hit a couple of hotspots in central Queens, Baisley Pond Park and Willow Lake Preserve, and then we took a quick stop at World’s Fair Marina to track down a few more species. There were plenty of birds on the water to keep me entertained, with close to 60 Greylag geese, 50 Canada Geese, 80 Wigeon, 250 Coots, plus a good assortment of Tufted Ducks, Gadwall, Shoveler and Mallard. I arrived, equipped with my telescope, long before dusk. However, gull numbers were poor: just three Herring Gulls.

Baisley Pond Park is the place to find Ring-necked Ducks and Redheads in New York City, it usually hosts the largest flock of wintering American Coots , and the Canada Goose and Ring-billed Gull flocks sometimes hide a rarity among them. I occasionally get to see the Redhead duck near my Mexican home of Morelia. Geese do not make it down to my home state of Michoacán, even in winter, so I am happy to see any species of goose, even Europe’s ultra-abundant Graylag Goose. Munich’s Englischer Garten is known to host several east-Asian Bar-headed Geese.

Looking at the official Bird Counts that the refuge provides, it showed that from 9/1 to 9/7 there were the following numbers: Ducks – 30,712 Canada Geese – 978 White-fronted (speckled) Geese – 236 With that many ducks, and thre amount of smoke, any real chance of identification was nearly impossible.
