Unlike the more common American Goldfinch, the Lesser Goldfinch’s ( Spinus psaltria ) plumage does not change color during breeding season. The male (seen below) has a black cap and, in Washington, Oregon, California, and Baja California, nearly all males have green backs. The male also has bright yellow underparts.

In 1806, Lewis and Clark saw condors near the Columbia River, which makes up much of the Washington-Oregon border. It is a collaboration of Rogue and the Oregon Zoo , one of a handful of condor breeding facilities in the United States ( review here ). But condors have not been in the Pacific Northwest for more than a century.

The story of the cahow, a “Lazurus species” that was thought to be extinct for over 300 years and then discovered to be breeding on a tiny remote island in Bermuda, is part of modern birding legend. My first bird in Washington DC, where I am visiting for the weekend. I had a beautifull view on 5 horned grebe here (one in breeding plumage), in Ann Arbor Michigan, for the 3 seconds it lasted, until I heard a huge “CRRACK&# , and I fell through the ice. Also the wood storks and sand hill cranes were cool, too.
