In mid-summer, the refuge is full of breeding birds, including Canada Goose, Mallard, Wood Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Pied-billed Grebe, Virginia Rail, Sandhill Crane, Black Tern, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, etc. There is an auto tour route with several trails along the route.

Royal Terns are interesting to me as a New York state birder as they are exclusively coastal and almost entirely a bird we see in fall after they disperse from their breeding grounds. The young tern was banded near Chincoteague, Virginia, on 17 July of this year when it was still too young to fly. Not bad for a young bird!

One of the two sub-species of Red Knot occurring in North America, the Rufa subspecies breeds in the Canadian Artic Region and migrates along the east or Atlantic coast of the United States. The other sub-species, Calidris canutus roselaari , migrates along the Pacific Coast and breeds in Alaska and the Wrangel Island in Russia.

According to the data the authors gathered from banded and recovered Blue Jays , the species shows both a northward post-breeding dispersal (which we’re probably seeing right now, in September) and a southward migration. That last bit is my own interpretation of the data.)

There is believed to be a very small breeding population of Mississippi Kites that occupy a small area that borders Pima and Cochise Counties. Lots of warblers were found, including Grace’s, Nashville, Virginia, Red-faced, Hermit, Lucy’s and Wilson’s. Here is that Red-necked Phalarope.

March 23/24: A Virginia’s Warbler forages in my jacaranda tree. A male Indigo Bunting , now in his brilliant blue breeding plumage, makes an equally brief visit. On March 20, a beautiful male Lazuli Bunting visits my birdbath, and a small flock of Cedar Waxwings fly overhead. March 22: A Monday; I go birding elsewhere.

Virginia Warbler: The Virginia Warbler is a common species in the thorn forest of the Balsas River Basin, so I had seen it often. This is the only migratory warbler to live entirely within Mexico, breeding in the northeast and wintering in the southwest. My Mexican birder friends reported the same over most of the country.

Ohio has tracked two families of their state-endangered breeding sandhill cranes and found them to have wintered over in Tennessee in 2010. Lots to think about.
