Last weekend in Central Park I managed to see nine species of sparrow in about four hours (ten if you count House Sparrows , which, of course, aren’t actually sparrows), and I missed the reported rarity (a Vesper Sparrow ). So what species, exactly, can a birder expect to see with reasonable effort in mid-April in New York City?

Also present along the north and south entrance roads were Song , White-throated and Fox Sparrows , the usual host of American Crows , and a sluggish, unresponsive American Robin. At our last stop, however, we were amazed when a Microwlave Owlven in full breeding plumage on a wheeled table rolled up to us and started beeping frantically.

Our time on the island was spent looking at birds, exploring, picnicking, throwing rocks in the water, and admiring a very cooperative Santa Cruz Island Fox. This picture actually has three species of shearwater in it - Pink-footed , Sooty , and Black-vented. Pigeon Guillemot Cepphus columba.

Though some species are shedding breeding plumage and taking on more somber winter colors, they’re still often cute as button. A little millet is okay, some birds like Dark-eyed Juncos (above) and native sparrows like Fox Sparrows, White-throated and White-crowned Sparrows like it. There are always cool bird to be seen.

I had a beautifull view on 5 horned grebe here (one in breeding plumage), in Ann Arbor Michigan, for the 3 seconds it lasted, until I heard a huge “CRRACK&# , and I fell through the ice. On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. Also present in other parts of the park were fox and white-throated sparrows.

They breed up here, and spend their winters (usually) in the lower reaches of the Arctic and near polynyas (year round ice free waters) such as the North Water Polynya between Ellesmere Island and Groenland. They are able to breed at the age of 5-6 weeks so it is easy to see, given the right conditions how quickly their population can grow.

The author, conservation biologist Caroline Fox, is observing the albatross’s shadow to the side of the boat. She doesn’t know the species till it emerges, almost dreamlike, from the heavy glare of the sun. These falcons mostly feed on insects, but in the breeding season they catch migrating passerines – they even time their breeding to coincide with Autumn migration of passerines in late summer! Such a fascinating species.

These could be the beginning of the formation of coveys, post breeding season flocks that form when the chicks become independent at about three months old. The Purple Swamp-hen ( Porphyrio porphyrio ) I turned south, walking past large groups of picnickers which were being patrolled by Australian White Ibis , one of the species of ibis also known as the Sacred Ibis. You’d be lucky today to find even a pair in Hungary, while according to the European Breeding Atlas 2 , it “has almost completely disappeared from S, central and W Italy, Switzerland, Norway and W Austria”. Here in the Brecks survival rates tend to be good, as Red Foxes, arguably the most serious predator of these birds, are scarce.
