Few experiences birding get me more excited than adding a new bird to my Queens list. Brown Pelican - Though two have been reported to eBird since 2008 this bird is even more of a long shot than Black Vulture. Sadly, it did not stick around to breed though I thought that it might.

The ride from Prisoner’s Harbor, where we had spent our day, to Scorpion Anchorage, was uneventful, though Desi did fall asleep and I did enjoy pretty good views of breeding-plumaged Pigeon Guillemots. It was truly an amazing experience only lessened by the fact that Desi slept through the whole thing.

The park is home to not one, not two, but large three colonies of breeding seabirds: the Brown Noddy , Magnificent Frigatebird , and Sooty Tern. No, that was not a typo, the Sooty Terns fly non-stop for an average of five years before they return to the Dry Tortugas to breed. Lots and lots of birds. Each took merely a minute or two.

One interesting experience here was finding a baby terrapin on the road and picking it up to move it only for peter to call out a Common Iora , one of my two lifer families of the day. Little Black Cormorants and Australian Pelican. The heat of the day encouraged the Australian Pelicans to rise up into the thermals and we understand that they spend time between the lake systems at Currawinya and Lake Bindegolly National Parks. Apparently they breed to the south and return to feed at Lake Bindegolly.

On that visit we paddled from Lake Argyle back to Kununurra over three days and that was a magnificent experience. All of the nice green vegetation around these drainage channels is very popular with the Cattle Egrets and by November they have some beautiful breeding plumage. Common Sandpiper. Cattle Egret.
