Nanhui, Shanghai in August

Sanderling: A bird with strong work ethics. Not sure if they are breeding but certainly they are trying, though I am not fully convinced of their competence. Some cuckoo species. And of course there are passerines, some which spent the summer at Nanhui, some just returning from their breeding grounds elsewhere.

Special ID problems in Mexico

I find the concept of a “leg man” offensive, but when it comes to these two species, their legs are the only practical way to distinguish them (dark for the Western, yellow for the Least). But in the winter, both species head for Mexico.

This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.
