Fearing that a natural disaster, introduced species, or disease could wipe this fragile population out, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the American Bird Conservancy, and other groups teamed up to translocate 50 of the birds to another island, Laysan. A recent survey of the birds suggests that the effort has been a success.

The second is to get an accurate account of species recorded, numbers of individuals seen, and effort exerted to record those birds. Fortunately, this year’s QCCBC had great, mild weather, a record fifty-three participants, and we tied our record for number of species seen with 124.

As it turned out, I was the only travel writer of the group. A quick check of the Collins 2 (I think American birders know this book as the “Birds of Europe”, but here, some branding mastermind has interconnected the company’s name and the book title) revealed that we are facing two Siberian Greylag Geese (race rubrirostris ).

Halfway up the pier, I spotted another knot of American Wigeon, and sure enough, this group included one individual with the tell-tale red head. (2) The guide covers 477 species, an expansion of 35 from the second edition, which was published in 1991. The first two questions were never definitely answered.
