Lacking the benefit of heated shelters, birds must heed that warning or perish. The coming cold takes a big bite out of life and is why millions of birds flee south to where summer reigns eternal. Even so, warm, friendly weather can’t stop a birder from choosing Costa Rica’s best birds of Halloween.

The layout of the lake has many small fingers that provide shelter, shallow water and many dense areas of Willow and Cottonwood trees. Certainly what I would consider to be an under birded area, eBird.com lists 232 species on 397 total check lists. One raft along had over 380 birds in it. Here is one of those Cassin’s.

The basic requirements for survival, food, shelter and water never seem to be in surplus. When it comes to a one stop shopping for food and shelter, no other plant is as widely used as the Cardon Cactus family. The larger birds will break open the round fuzzy balls to get at the white pulpy fruit and black seeds.

Birds are able to fly away, but their nests and eggs can be destroyed. Since their habitat has been destroyed, wildlife become displaced and must spend more time searching for food, water and shelter. I was able to visualize six of the bird houses that survived. Some animals are injured and killed by wildfires.

Many bird species were observed feeding in the blooms of these cacti. Saguaro Cactus also provides shelter and nesting sites for a wide range of desert birds as can be seen by the many nest cavities on this specimen. These largest of North American cactus also provide shelter and nesting sites for a variety of bird species.

Red-crowned Parrot in Irvine Regional Park Despite the number of species involved only one, the Red-crowned Parrot , is considered countable by the California Bird Records Committee. After all, the annals of North American birding history are loaded with examples of species that were introduced, flourished for awhile, and then died out.

We were constantly being asked locally if we had crossed the river yet to see the magnificent birding at North Cave Wetlands and so it was only a matter of time before we headed over the Humber Bridge to see what everybody was talking about! Danum Valley is the finest birding location I have ever been to. And places I have seen more birds. But a a package, if I had to rate the best places I’ve ever been birding, the only place I can think that comes close is Mweya, in Uganda, or maybe Tikal, in Guatemala. There are, certainly, places I’ve enjoyed more.

A bit of background: Pink Pigeons are medium-sized, pink/gray/ brown birds found on the island of Mauritius, Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. Mauritius may sound familiar, it was also the home of one of our most famous extinct birds—the Dodo. Don’t these birds care about propagating their species? Horses bolted.

A quick search of the 10,000 Birds archives turned over very little in the way of Japanese birding and since I have just returned from Tokyo, having fulfilled an ambition to visit Oi Bird Park, I shall pad out our Japanese content a little. The Oi Bird Park has been renamed and is now known as the Tokyo Port Wild Bird Park.
