Birding Kabul, Afghanistan

10,000 Birds

I did not actually go to Afghanistan for birding. So, birds in Kabul. I am only including them in this post to give you my real-life Kabul experience … Four species are the most easily seen in the few urban parks (into which women are not actually allowed to enter – I am not sure about female birds).

Angry Birds, What’s Black and White and Hungry All Over, and a Little Something for the Ladies: This Week in Bird News

10,000 Birds

If there’s one common theme to this week’s bird news items, it’s their collective bizarreness: The eagle has landed—on the drone, as France trains birds to take out drones that stray into restricted airspace. Laughing at you, not with you

10,000 Birds

It’s the eyes, I guess.

10,000 Birds

Though it took place in a zoo the video below definitely shows some wild behavior. If you don’t want to see a bird killed and eaten then don’t watch it. Instead may I recommend some cuteness ?) If you have the stomach for nature, red in tooth and claw, then watch away! Crazy, no?

10,000 Birds

Robert Gallardo is well-known to many readers of 10,000 Birds as an outstanding Neotropical nature guide, author, and manager of La Chorcha Lodge. We are talking about the flora and fauna and in particular the birds, whose sole beauty makes them an easy target for some people. And these are just the direct assaults against birds!

How cold is it?

10,000 Birds

It’s cold enough in Chicago—where our high temperature for the day was –2 degrees Farenheit—that the polar bear at the zoo spent the day inside. Midwest (and, soon, the East) bad for birds? Most birds will probably fare just fine, if the cold snap is as short-lived as predicted. So I’m grateful that birding has steeled me.
