These days, quite a few species are breeding at Nanhui, Shanghai. The first sign of an adult bird approaching was all of the chicks opening their bills. Side thought: Seeing bird photos I am often amazed how the birds seem to select a background where they more or less blend in best.

So, I asked around and was told that Qinghai is the place to go to for birds in China in August. Going to Qinghai usually starts with a flight to Xining, the capital. But it is not.

White’s Thrush is described as “burly” on eBird – not entirely unjustified, I guess, but this description fails to capture the way the intricate patterns of the bird make for great camouflage and also for its own kind of beauty. Each evening the shorebirds head off on their migration to breed in the Northern hemisphere. Most of the shorebirds will be flying non-stop until they reach China.
