Arizona, or Central Mexico?

10,000 Birds

I got back into birding less than a decade ago, long after moving to Mexico in 1983. All sorts of exotic and beautiful species may be seen. This would sound attractive even to me, except for one fact: almost all of those exotic and beautiful species are common down here in central Mexico. But this one did.

Black-bellied Whistling Ducks in La Paz, Mexico

10,000 Birds

I am sure there are many reasons why these nasty pools of varying degrees of “black” water seem to be magnets for a large number of species. Bear in mind, these areas do not smell like a rose garden, especially on a 100 degree Mexican summer day. The amount of insects that are prevalent is, I am sure, a huge one.

For the Love of Trogons

10,000 Birds

Honesty requires that I confess to having seen none of these species. Here in the highlands of central Mexico, we can see (rather easily, as I mentioned above) two trogons: the Mountain Trogon , and the Elegant Trogon. Bright and Brighter

10,000 Birds

This is my best place to pick up species that inhabit, or visit, the border between the Hot Country thorn forest and highland pine-oak forest habitats. It wasn’t the most colorful species of the day. And how am I doing on my species race for the year? But its rump was somewhat bright, I suppose.

Let me start off with being quite clear, there are no grizzly Bears on the Baja! All of which, was for one a one day shoot with the famed bears, as they dined on the fall salmon run. In addition to the Grizzly Bears , I was able to photograph Woodland Buffalo , squirrels, deer, Red Fox , and even a herd of Yaks. Common Redpoll.

Creating habitat

10,000 Birds

I love living in central Mexico, and miss very few things about living in the U.S. Of course, I also love birding in Mexico, with its 1,000+ species, and seemingly infinite variety of habitats. Mexico, like many developing countries, has a terrible problem with habitat destruction. So how do I get my natives?

Monterrey Meetings

10,000 Birds

Work brings me regularly to Monterrey in Nuevo Leon, northern Mexico. The day was only minutes old and we already had 32 species on the day list. Our agave flower stalk had three species of hummingbird drinking nectar, dive-bombing and stabbing each other: Blue-throated Mountain-gem, Lucifer Hummingbird and Broad-tailed Hummingbird.
