Arizona, or Central Mexico?

10,000 Birds

I got back into birding less than a decade ago, long after moving to Mexico in 1983. This would sound attractive even to me, except for one fact: almost all of those exotic and beautiful species are common down here in central Mexico. Northern Bear dless Tyrannulets , adorable little flycatchers, rarely visit my garden.

Black-bellied Whistling Ducks in La Paz, Mexico

10,000 Birds

Bear in mind, these areas do not smell like a rose garden, especially on a 100 degree Mexican summer day. The La Paz, Mexico waste treatment plant is actually quite near to town, mostly due to the residential growth creeping closer and closer. The lack of human visitors that frequent the area, is likely to be one as well.

Thanks, Thrushes

10,000 Birds

239 is only good enough to place me at #280 for the nation of Mexico; even twice that number would not put me in Mexico’s top ten. In addition to the Grizzly Bears , I was able to photograph Woodland Buffalo , squirrels, deer, Red Fox , and even a herd of Yaks.

For the Love of Trogons

10,000 Birds

Here in the highlands of central Mexico, we can see (rather easily, as I mentioned above) two trogons: the Mountain Trogon , and the Elegant Trogon. Males of both species share the odd distinction of bearing the colors of the Mexican flag, with a green head, white chest band, and bright red breast. Which you should.

Monterrey Meetings

10,000 Birds

Work brings me regularly to Monterrey in Nuevo Leon, northern Mexico. We finally reached Mesa de Oso , the table (mountain) of the bear. Monterrey is a big industrial city, with industrious people. It is a special city because the surrounding Parque Nacional Cumbres de Monterrey redeems the city’s many environmental sins.

Bright and Brighter

10,000 Birds

Oddly enough, it is the Western Bluebird that bears the taxonomic name of Sialia mexicana ; but in my experience, the Eastern Bluebird ( Sialia sialia ) is much more common in most of Mexico. This Black-headed Grosbeak displayed several nice colors beyond basic black. Eastern Bluebirds seemed to be everywhere.
