It seems his family of 5, had rented a condo that sleeps 8, at Atlantis Resort, on Paradise Island, in the Bahamas. Now it was time to see what fun birds I could track down, and what kind of help was available once we got there. Despite all this, we did manage to get nearly 20 new birds for the list. Parking lots in Miami-Dade county offer a mostly standard assortment of birds compared to the rest of the United States. However, my favorite parking lot bird by far is the Gray Kingbird , a tyrant flycatcher with a feisty disposition and lots of character. Last year it was New Providence in the Bahamas. The sun was out, the birds were singing, and I got to point out Northern Gannets patrolling offshore. Instead of being around for breeding birds like my last visit I would be focusing on migratory species and Cape Henlopen delivered with forty-six species in an hour-and-a-half of birding.

Also, tropical waters lack the dynamics for significant upwellings of cold, nutrient rich water to reach the surface and feed the extreme density of plankton that feed the vast schools of fish these birds rely upon.

In my first trip to the West Indies , I learned that the Bahamas boast an impressive array of wild native doves including the Caribbean Dove and White-crowned Pigeon. Eurasian Collared-Dove Streptopeleia decaocto is one of the most active invasive bird species of our day. Not bad for a non-migratory bird!

The Eurasian Collared-Dove , as Larry has already ably pointed out , has spread rapidly across North America since its release in the Bahamas in the mid-1970s. I myself went out to see the dove a couple of Saturdays ago, making my way out to Chelsea Waterfront Park and spending four hours looking for the bird with no luck.
