One of the reasons Mexico is such a great birding area is that, while it shares all sorts of bird groups with the United States and Canada, it also is home to some of the northernmost representatives of neotropical and genera that do not (or just barely) reach that far north, such as Woodcreepers, Tityras, and Trogons.

American White Pelicans spend their winter months along the Gulf states, California, parts of Arizona, and Mexico down into Central America. I’m talking, of course, about “my” flock of American White Pelicans. They migrate north through the Western United States, breeding in pockets all the way up through Canada.

Of all the hotspots in Arizona, I would have thought that numerous places other than the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum would have been more likely. I am a westerner, so perhaps it is a glorious hotspot, but I’ve never heard Cape Ann, Massachusetts referred to as a world-class birding location.

The state with the largest increase was Arizona , with 139 species added. Two of these are new to the 100+ list.

It was something that truly caught me by surprise, a bird usually heard or seen in Mexico or certain, out of the way gulches in Arizona. There are other birds still expected, I have a few in mind that probably also occur somewhere in the border area with Nicaragua (hello Altamira Oriole and Ladder-backed Woodpecker ).

Clapper Rails , as currently defined by the AOU, occur along the coasts of North and South America and Caribbean islands, and inland in southern California and Arizona. A common local resident when we were in Mexico, the Costa’s Hummingbird is a little bit more of a rarity here in Arizona. Here in the highlands of central Mexico, we can see (rather easily, as I mentioned above) two trogons: the Mountain Trogon , and the Elegant Trogon. In theory, the Elegant Trogon can be seen in southeastern Arizona, as is the case for so many Mexican species. Honesty requires that I confess to having seen none of these species.

Today I will cover another one of Mexico’s Baja Peninsulas characters, the Zone-tailed Hawk Buteo Albonotatus. Zone-tailed Hawks can be found in the extreme lower parts of the US, in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, with an estimated population of 450-650 birds. Below is a photo I got on Sunday of a juvenile.

I don’t feel that we have exhausted the possibilities here in Arizona, but they are one here, one there, and spread all over that state. We are squeezing out one more road trip, leaving Arizona and heading towards Texas.

The Grey-silky Flycatcher Ptilogonys cincerus , the is nearly an endemic of central Mexico, but for a few vagrants who vacation down in Guatemala. They frequent the dry, hot desert areas, which includes Arizona, Nevada and central mainland Mexico.

This native of Oklahoma, Texas, and Mexico is now recognized as a separate species, but the two species will hybridize when they meet. The Oak Titmouse resides on the Pacific Slope from southern Oregon to the Baja, while the Juniper is a bird of the Great Basin and desert riparian woods as far south as Arizona, Texas, and Mexico.

There are two Painted Bunting populations, one that breeds along the Atlantic Coast from North Carolina to Florida and one that breeds in the interior United States and northern Mexico from southeastern New Mexico to western Mississippi.
