Luke is a coordinator with the Tucson Audubon Society, and was incredibly helpful with getting my feet on the ground, as far as South East Arizona Birding. After removing the legs, swallowed the bug whole.

One of the small cities south of Tucson Arizona, Amado, has a very small pond, right along highway 19, also known as the Nogales Highway. Most birders that have spent any amount of time chasing down our fine feathered friends have learned that most cities waste treatment facilities are incredible magnets for many species of birds.

Most days you will get a good look at the Arizona Woodpecker. The resident Wild Turkey population is always ready for an easy meal at the feeders. This is a great place to see a good number of Mexican Jays. I was quiet surprised to see this male Western Tanager show up right at dark for a quick drink of water.

For most avian migrants heading south towards Mexico, Central and South America, crossing thru the Arizona desert areas can provide very few water, food and resting areas. This 90 acre lake, managed by Arizona Fish and Wildlife is about a 45 mile drive from Tucson, and 9 miles from Mexico, as the Chihuahuan Raven flies.

I had the pleasure of paying this national park a visit on a trip to Arizona in late May, and I was immediately struck by how important this species of plant is to this ecosystem. Perhaps because of the heat and the lack of insulation which the cactus can provide, Purple Martins do not nest in man-made houses in Arizona.

Yes, it’s the same species that so many North American birders have looked for around the San Pedro River (myself included) and like those Arizona birds, our urban Gray Hawks likewise use riparian zones. In Costa Rica, the urban raptor can take more than one form but usually, the local avian top predator is a Gray Hawk.

One of the great things about living in southern Arizona is our proximity to Mexico. A common local resident when we were in Mexico, the Costa’s Hummingbird is a little bit more of a rarity here in Arizona. This picture shows the Canyon Wren, bringing food to their nest, located in a narrow crack in a cliff side.

Having spent all morning bashing the Sonoran Desert hoping to find my lifer roadrunner for example, I retired to a burger restaurant only to watch Mrs Geococcyx brazenly skip down the drive-through lane and c**k an eye up at the delivery window.

In other hummingbird migration news, the wildfires in southeast Arizona this summer did a number on hummingbird habitat and birds are swarming to feeders. Most of the nectar rich flowers western birds use as a fuel up spot on their way south aregone and birds are crowding at feeders.
