Quebec is not known for its animal welfare concerns or laws. I think the issue stems from this being an Islamic practice and the fear of contaminated meat, not concern for the animals. It wants to know how many companies are involved in producing halal meat and the number of animals are being slaughtered annually under Islamic ritual.

Too little, too late – yes; but still a step in the right direction. You guessed it right – the hunting lobby used their influence for political pressures. The Turtle Dove is not a trophy animal. Unfortunately, a record number of horses are now going to Canadian and Mexican slaughterhouses, where there is no USDA control over animal welfare conditions. I don't support the slaughter of any animal, but if an animal will die anyway, don't we want the best possible conditions? I just don't know. He's such a douchebag.

I came across this strange article about German research on which slaughter method creates more pain for the animal: the Western method of stunning or the Islamic method of a cut to the neck. It is also used to prevent the animal from feeling pain before it dies. According to the researchers, the Islamic method wins.

While plenty of people pay attention to the question of what it means to raise an animal humanely, far fewer stop to consider the notion—and the ostensible paradox—of humane slaughter." The animal is an "it," but I wouldn't expect anything more in this type of article. All you need to know is one word: slaughter.

What do you do when you – a citizen whose rights are protected by the U.S. This is what we need for birds, whose rights as government-protected species are violated every day by free-roaming cats. They would be made up of people who are sick and tired of government-protected species being slaughtered by domestic cats.

The “Crow Down” is a “hunting contest” where both adults and children slaughter as many crows as they possibly can in two days. Some people think it’s just plain fun to kill enormous numbers of animals and pile up their bodies, and when there’s no “bag limit” it’s legal to do so. Why do they do this?

I've used the term "animal activism" lately as an experiment. I notice that if I use "animal rights activist" or anything with the word "rights" in it, because it's loaded and misunderstood, my listener often has an immediate bias of some kind. First, note that now PeTA is an "animal advocacy group."

The storytellers are (with two exceptions) people whose livelihoods came from using animals. And more important is that those storytellers include people who ran small, family operations that animal welfare advocates would not have a problem with. It's impersonal and hideously ugly and the animals suffer greatly. However, the solution they have created, which harkens back to before industrialized agriculture, is simply to still raise animals for their flesh and secretions, and for profit, but to do it the old-fashioned way. It's just not right. No argument here.

Here's the good news: This is a very readable explanation of how animals in the Hundred Heartbeat Club (there are 100 or fewer individuals in the wild today) got to be in the club. I finally read SPECIESISM , by Joan Dunayer, which was published a couple of years after ANIMAL EQUALITY , which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago.
