Today's New York Times gives us Adam Shriver's Op-Ed " Not Grass-Fed, But at Least Pain-Free ," which presents its dilemma at the end: If we cannot avoid factory farms altogether, the least we can do is eliminate the unpleasantness of pain in the animals that must live and die on them. Like when they're about to be, say, slaughtered?

How many people know this about the Animal Welfare Act? No wonder there is so much "farm" animal abuse out there. Humane treatment runs counter to the entire industry when the point is to make money by processing these animals as fast as possible. Most animals in the U.S. This is really interesting. It never ceases to amaze me that people will get upset about the death of an animal whose killing was their job. In " Cows Killed by Lightning Strike ," by Angie Brown of the BBC Scotland, which today was updated to "Lightning Strike Kills Bullocks," we learn that Mr. McDougal was "very upset," numb and shocked by "the carnage he saw."

And now that I've read Animal Equality and begun Speciesism , I think I know why. People in South Florida are still in an uproar over the mutilation and slaughter of 19 house cats (allegedly) by 18-year old Tyler Weinman, who was declared mentally competent and not a danger to himself or others (!).
