The use of tool by animals is surprisingly rare. Among birds the Egyptian Vulture uses rocks to crack Ostrich eggs, the New Caledonian Crow and Woodpecker Finch (one of several Darwin Finches of the Galapagos Islands), uses sticks to extract grubs from inside a branch. Further support for inherent behavior comes from experiments.

During a two-year long moratorium on hunting in T&T, I had some of the most incredible birding experiences. We heard some animal trundling through the bushes but got no visual. That corner was particularly fruitful as always, we even had appearances by a Cocoa Woodcreeper and a Chestnut Woodpecker.
