Last week the media was eating up a story about a poor, little 80 year old woman who violated a 2009 No Trespass Order that prohibited her from visiting local parks in Massachusetts. Another example would be the Eagle Lady in Alaska. The Eagle Lady has also died and now the town bans the feeding of eagles and other birds.

The Nisqually estuary was restored in 2009 by removing dikes and reconnecting 762 acres with the tides of Puget Sound. Over 200 species of birds can be found on the refuge, depending on the time of year. I got to see several Brown Creepers in the area. These were my first Fox Sparrows of the year.

I’d only ever seen Garganey once before, way back in 2009 in Kazakhstan. So we set to scanning, adding species and birders at a roughly two-to-one ratio. We saw Sandhill Cranes , Northern Shovelers , and Bald Eagles. After all, we now knew the bird was still present. What if we missed it? Yeah, the bird was distant.

Phillipps’ Field Guide (I’ll be using this shortened form of the title) covers 673 avian species, including 59 endemics, and 53 species that have not been documented yet for the area but which may show up in the next few years. Now, I’m not so sure.

I first met Robert Gallardo on my first trip to the neotropics, a wonderful experience at the first Mesoamerican Bird Festival in Honduras in 2009. He is a great birder and has found over thirty new species in Honduras since he moved there in 1993. Great Green Macaws are still common there and a few weeks ago I saw a Crested Eagle.

Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting. It’s free!

It has entertaining stories, includes animals people care about because they like them (and also addresses that concept), and it describes how the numbers of various species decreased to the point of being classified as "endangered" or worse.

Orlando is so rich in roadside and overhead birds that I kept a list of species seen from the car which ran to 30+ on the first morning and included a Bald Eagle nonchalantly sitting on a street lamp by a Target store. This is not good habitat for a Redgannet ; I had to get out of line. What a show … er … show-off!
