This pitiful story fired Claudia’s imagination and even though she holds down a full-time job, she managed to find the time to open a soup kitchen for pets including dogs, cats, rabbits and any other animals people had in their homes but were having trouble feeding. She says if her cats die then she too has no reason to live.

While shopping for pet food in 2008, Maryam Faresh and her partner Bruce Meade saw a sign hanging on the wall with a picture of a white puppy with spots and strange looking eyes. Maryam and Bruce have already experienced a “special needs” animal with their cat, Louie. The sign read, “Blind and deaf puppy needs home.”

Unfortunately for the hunters these were already all extinct, and with the introduction of cats, rats, stoats and the like the only upland game bird, the New Zealand Quail , was fast on the way out too. Indeed, by 2008, when I first really became aware of the issue, the West Coast of South Island was pretty much their only stronghold.

Attendance dropped by 20,831 to 904,000 in the 2008-2009 fiscal year, said Wayne Reading, the zoo's chief financial officer. Shon Rahrig : While living in Ohio in 1999, Rahrig allegedly adopted several cats and a puppy from local shelters and tortured them sadistically. He poked out the eyes of a cat named Misty, broke her legs and jaw, cut off her paws, and left her bleeding in a laundry basket. His whereabouts are unknown.

The Nonggang Babbler ‘s claim to fame is having only been discovered in 2008 (as a meaningless reference, it should be added that the first iPhone was released in 2007, one year earlier). Nonggang is a rural place in Guangxi with a nice landscape somewhat reminiscent of coastal Northern Vietnam (well, it is not too far away).

Solomon Islanders say that the species was driven to extinction by cats and dogs introduced by Europeans. The large, crested Choiseul Pigeon ( Microgoura meeki ) inhabited Choiseul and perhaps nearby islands in the Solomon Islands. Specimens were collected in 1904, and the bird has not been recorded with certainty since.
