The brilliant orange coloration and rich, haunting song of the Spot-breasted Oriole ( Icterus pectoralis ) makes this species one of my favorite permanent residents in southeastern Florida, even though it is an introduced exotic. How can an introduced species be a favorite among birders? Don’t they compete with native birds?

I have participated in something like twenty Christmas Bird Counts since I started birding in 2005. The second is to get an accurate account of species recorded, numbers of individuals seen, and effort exerted to record those birds. If I accomplish both of those goals and the weather cooperates then the count should do well.

Species searches on eBird reveal that both species might be found in Tokyo, though White’s is much more common, with a few contemporary sightings. White’s Thrush contains two subspecies, aurea and toratugumi; and Scaly Thrush includes the subspecies dauma, major, and horsfieldi, each of which also is recogized as a monotypic group.

Here are some things I’ve learned from the Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Caribbean by Scott Weidensaul: The Burrowing Owl is the only North American owl species where the male is larger than the female, albeit, only slightly larger. The 39 owls include five endemic Caribbean species.

Thankfully due to the long life span of this bird species the population appears to be somewhat stable at the moment. The Northern area of Cable Beach fares even worse than the area closer to habitation despite there being more pairs of Pied Oystercatchers. Pied Oystercatcher nest.

Hawk watchers and birders who look at hawks (not always the same group!) There are probably more identification guides about raptors than there are for any other bird group. The new edition adds 11 species, birds such as Zone-tailed Hawk, Short-tailed Hawk, and California Condor that are only seen in specific areas of North America.

Phillipps’ Field Guide (I’ll be using this shortened form of the title) covers 673 avian species, including 59 endemics, and 53 species that have not been documented yet for the area but which may show up in the next few years. Now, I’m not so sure.

Even if you don’t live in the summer range of a particular species, you may have opportunities to observe it while it passes through, especailly if you live in an active flyway, like I happen to. If migration evolved many times in birds, then it would be worth asking if it evolved in birds more often than in other groups of vertebrates.

A combination of extinctions and proximity to Fiji means that a trip to that island group would net you pretty much all the same birds plus a whole raft of others. According to the guides it is a forest bird in Fiji (and an elusive one, I never saw one in my week there in 2005) but in Tonga I saw it in the towns and country gardens.
