As far as right now, the first report of a Calliope Hummingbird from the local bird mailing list came in on April 22. It’s also the smallest hummingbird to be found north of Mexico, which is the closest to invisible. My life Rufous was wintering in New York just outside the Museum of Natural History.

Well, we got to see the iguanas until they both suddenly realized that a whole boatload of people was drifting right up to them at which point they skedaddled, but by that point everyone with camera had already managed several shots and those without had enjoyed great looks that they probably would not ever forget.

In upstate New York, sparrows, doves, woodpeckers, and cardinals fall into this category and are probably why we see more of those backyard birds (and their semi-psychedelic stylized versions) on Christmas cards, napkins, and other random types of stationary. Watch for it at any number of lowland and foothill sites.

The first sighting was of an individual seen and photographed right off the pier at Boynton Inlet on December 9, 2012. To put this bit of trivia into perspective, there were simultaneous tropical storm warnings for both New York City and Bermuda — a distance of about 770 miles!

So looking at a Rufous Hummingbird and seeing the tropics is a bit of an error (although the majority of individuals who don’t get lost winter in Mexico.)
