I’ve volunteered with a couple of organizations that had education birds used for public programs. At another organization, the education Great Horned Owl dropped its head, neck and body feathers, leaving only the facial disc feathers and wing feathers in place during the molt.

It was a pelagic trip organized by See Life Paulagics and it was a pretty memorable trip with five species of shearwater, Leach’s Storm-Petrels , Wilson’s Storm-Petrels , a variety of dolphins, some sharks, and a variety of other sea life.

They were to be deployed to Ground Zero with 200 other members of New Jersey Task Force 1, including structural engineers and medical workers, as well as other search-and-rescue people. Since most civilian search-and-rescue people are volunteers, this puts a heavy burden on these citizens, who do this work out of the goodness of their hearts.

Not only were her organs exposed, the entire area was alive with maggots. We medicated her for maggots, picked at least 100,000 of the creepy critters from her abdomen, and finally treated the injury. We put her on the clinic’s exam table. Even as a veteran wildlife rehabilitator, I could scarcely believe the sight before me.
