The group has a worldwide distribution; 28 species living and two additional extinct. Both extinct species were island-dwelling and flightless, suggesting a propensity of the group to disperse over long distances , a characteristic that any birder in late summer is familiar with. If I have a mid-morning meeting my strategy is to leave much earlier than necessary so as to avoid the worst of the traffic. This often means that I end up with an hour or so to kill in Bayonne. A few visits between late summer and yesterday has gotten my Hudson County list up to sixty-three species, for what it’s worth.

I’m fairly certain that it was the deliberate strategy of the bird to kill the duck on the water and wait for it to come ashore. This bird was “tamer” than most of her species because she had become accustomed to hunting the narrow causeway for ducks and was relatively acclimated to all the vehicular traffic.

The ongoing destruction of Nanhui, where the species can frequently be seen on migration, certainly will not help. Judging from the facial expression of this White-shouldered Starling , I would rather not have an annoyed bird of this species as a roommate. The species has reversed sex roles, with the males doing the incubating.

The Fairy Pitta is listed as Vulnerable, with the HBW that the species is “rare; global population probably no more than a few thousand individuals” While the sexes are alike, my guess is that the Fairy Pitta in the photo is a male given its early arrival date in Shanghai. And how do Fairy Pittas get injured and possibly die?

While the species favors forested hills at moderate elevations ( source ), there are no hills at all here at Nanhui, so maybe these individuals are outcasts or just eccentrics. Chestnut-winged Cuckoo: This could be your host species! In the HBW, there are about 40 species with the word “plain” in the species name.

With an obvious hint of disapproval, the HBW remarks that for this species, the “nest [is] a small or bulky but always untidy pad” I suspect the author of these lines lives with teenage children and uses the description of the magpie-robin to vent some frustration with them. But it is all for science, I hear them say.
