Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of August 2018)

This weekend, I thrilled to the wail of an Eastern Screech Owl in my neighbor’s yard; maybe I should become better friends with those neighbors in case the owl returns. Corey enjoyed shorebirds on the beach in the Rockaways, in the mud at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Wildlife, and on pavement at Floyd Bennett Field this weekend.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of November 2018)

The fact that this hour falls in the middle of the night means that most people sleep right through it, but I wonder what would happen if you observes a nocturnal bird like an owl during the hour that gets reset. Could you still count it? A couple of intrepid Blue Jays may have been chasing everything else away. How about you?

This past Friday, after leaving Cupsogue where my twitch for the Wilson’s Plover had ended in success I decided to head back over to Big Egg Marsh in my home borough of Queens to see if I could rediscover the Burrowing Owl I had seen the previous evening could be rediscovered. Sadly, the owl remained missing.

My Ten Best Birds of 2019

I always wanted to see a bright red male and my long wait was over this December when I managed to connect with one at San Joaquin Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary. And not only did Jamaica Bay, as usual, not disappoint, but it came through in a major way! Number 3 – Sage Thrasher. Number 2 – Pectoral Sandpiper.
