When our local driver asked me in Patois, an English-lexified creole language unique to Jamaica, if we would like to go and see Jamaican Owl , I had no idea what he was talking about. But I remember hearing the owl in my sleep.

Jamaica Birding Trip 2013 Part II

Heading out of Ecclesdown Road on the second day of my trip, I had nailed all of my targets save four species ( Caribbean Dove , Yellow-billed Parrot , Jamaican Owl , and Stolid Flycatcher ). I told her that I had three target birds left to see, and she gestured at a tree near the guesthouse where three Jamaican Owls were roosting.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of February 2020)

Though I traveled to NYC this weekend, Ivy and I nailed down our best bird before I left; a Short-eared Owl has been hunting at a local park not 10 minutes from our house, which makes for the easiest owl sighting we’ve snagged in a long time!

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of August 2018)

This weekend, I thrilled to the wail of an Eastern Screech Owl in my neighbor’s yard; maybe I should become better friends with those neighbors in case the owl returns. Corey enjoyed shorebirds on the beach in the Rockaways, in the mud at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Wildlife, and on pavement at Floyd Bennett Field this weekend.

Twenty-Four Hours of Awesome Part Three: Sweet, Sweet Sage

This past Friday, after leaving Cupsogue where my twitch for the Wilson’s Plover had ended in success I decided to head back over to Big Egg Marsh in my home borough of Queens to see if I could rediscover the Burrowing Owl I had seen the previous evening could be rediscovered. Sadly, the owl remained missing.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of November 2018)

The fact that this hour falls in the middle of the night means that most people sleep right through it, but I wonder what would happen if you observes a nocturnal bird like an owl during the hour that gets reset. Could you still count it? A couple of intrepid Blue Jays may have been chasing everything else away. How about you?
