Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, Honduras, March 2009 After our trip to the Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge was rained out on our first morning at The Lodge at Pico Bonito we rescheduled our visit for our second and last morning at the lodge. Yes, you read that right, two FREAKING MANGROVE CUCKOOS perched OUT IN THE OPEN! Howler monkeys!

It has a high, thin warble, but I usually only hear its high, soft tsii call.The Golden-browed Warbler can be found from Mexico down to Honduras, and like the Red Warbler , its warble is rarely heard, while its buzzy tsssi call is quite common. Both are mostly found in very high, moist forests. chi-chi-chi-chi-chi-ssiu-ssiu-ssiu-ssiu.

Other stops revealed more Red-eyed Vireos, additional Scarlet Tanagers, and a few Summer Tanagers but the biggest movements of birds took place right on the coast. The same goes for Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, and other places along their migration routes. Yeah, I daresay those birds do pass through Costa Rica in the millions.

Luck always plays a role for seeing these monster goshawks but so does looking for them in the right places. Although most times, they still skulk down below the feeder, on a couple of occasions, I had one of them jump right up and partake in papaya on the feeder platform. Thanks to a fair degree of participation in the right places, I daresay that we birders in Tiquicia did quite well in garnering a total of 650 plus species. Although several cotingas are famous for perching right on the tip top of a tree, our GBD bird sneaked into the canopy vegetation. This happened in probably less than a second.

To be honest, quetzals aren’t seen that often right at Myriam’s but they are seen just down the road. Quetzal is THE beloved, sacred bird of Guatemala and they do live there (and in southern Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama) BUT are more accessible in Costa Rica. Myriam’s Quetzales ! Are they her’s?

Since the male Snowcap only occurs in foothill rainforests from Honduras to western Panama, is pretty uncommon (or at least often hard to see), and has deep wine reddish plumage with a glowing white crown, it can’t help but be a perpetual good bird.

The one case that could have been an actual Turkey was a bird spotted in Honduras, where they may or may not have been, by our friend Christopher Columbus. The chance that this was a real Turkey are not great, and the chance that Columbus actually brought breeding stock from Honduras to Spain is not great, so maybe, maybe not.

Seen under the right light conditions, the Red-tailed Comet has a spectacular red rump and long golden-red tail. Found in Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua, this tiny hummingbird is placed within its own genus microchera. hummers on earth. Coming in at no. 19 is the celestial Red-tailed Comet.
