Birding Shanghai in May 2022

Some of the more conservative Light-vented Bulbuls in my compound were trying to make the wearing of a tie mandatory for the species. But indeed they vanish somewhere once the people pretending to try and catch fish appear. But the stars of the month were some breeding Eurasian Tree Sparrows. So, I took these photos for them.

Yes, cute little Skylarks were all well and good, but what Kiwis really wanted were birds they could shoot and fish they could, uh, fish. The obvious choice was the Mallard , that plucky familiar northern hemisphere species that is the father of the even more familiar domesticated duck. Not sure if it is yet.

Birding Breezy Point

Breezy Point, the westernmost tip of the barrier islands that protect Long Island’s south shore, is also the southwestern most portion of Queens and one of my favorite locations to look for birds. Both expected species of loons were around in numbers. Field Sparrow in February is a fine bird.

Birding the Kruger Park (4): Letaba area

As the national bird of Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, the African Fish Eagle is usually very busy whenever it stays in these countries, giving speeches, opening shopping centers, etc. Reportedly, the Water Thick-knee sometimes locates its nest close to the nest of Nile crocodiles as this offers some protection.

In 1974, Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge was established to protect the delta and its diversity of fish and wildlife habitats. Over 200 species of birds can be found on the refuge, depending on the time of year. These were my first Fox Sparrows of the year. Here are a few scenics from my last few days on the refuge.
