From the Seattle PI: The killing of about seven elk cornered in a farm pasture in eastern Skagit County has spurred state officials to close the elk archery season in the area and angered others who either witnessed or heard about the killings. Even other hunters were disgusted: "How can you call that hunting?"

Birding Tengchong, Yunnan (again)

Sadly, the HBW states that the species is “almost extinct in some areas in China owing to hunting and trapping for the cagebird trade and taxidermy” The Maroon Oriole looks much more interesting, though my photos do not really do it full justice.

Freeze-birding down the Danube

In front of us, the river is two miles wide… and it is paved with birds: smaller groups of Greater White-fronted and Greylag Geese , numerous Mute Swans and Mallards , plus Eurasian Teals , Gadwalls , Common Pochards , a few Ferruginous and Tufted Ducks , Common Goldeneyes and several Smews. A goose hunt sounds like a WWII battle.

Birding Around the Farm

As mentioned in my previous post , we were hosted for an afternoon session at Jonathan ‘s farm. Coming off a high from our morning boat ride, excitement was high as we pulled into the farm compound. On the slow crawl into the farm, the first sighting was a small group of Green Ibis – a new species for me.

I had never seen this species of kite before, but Guhin explained that they often hunted in the natural acres of the reserve. The trail wove downhill, around farm buildings demonstrative of the agricultural history of the site before it became protected. Guhin knew without binoculars, “ White-tailed Kite ,” she identified.
