Rancho Naturalista Lodge, Costa Rica, or When Harry Met Mercedes

I am taking a sip of coffee, my eyes following an impossibly colourful Kill-Bill ( Keel-billed) Toucan , flying against the background of the Irazu Volcano slopes and, farther to the right, water-vapour ‘smoking’ Turrialba Volcano on the horizon. Quite a few mammals come out in the open to steal bananas left for the birds.

The gamekeeper drives by, I wave my greetings but do not mention the jackals I am observing at the moment: this animal is not protected in Serbia and is allowed for killing year-round (one may say “hunting” instead, but I am having problems trying to spot the difference). A paper reports on how a female Common Cuckoo was mobbed and killed by Oriental Reed Warbler hosts. While to my knowledge the Large Hawk-Cuckoo only migrates through Nanhui, the Common Cuckoo stays here in summer and looks for host species, particularly the Oriental Reed Warbler.

I and the Bird: What is a Vulture?

That bald head, so odd and homely, is actually an adaptation for sticking one’s head deep inside the gut of a deceased mammal. Old World Vultures are nestled within the family Acciptridae along with the hawks and eagles. They primarily prey on the large mammals of the African plains, grasslands stretching from horizon to horizon.
