Today an adult bird was hunting while two juvenile birds waited, knee-deep in water, apparently unclear what to do next. The adult bird had had some success and stopped hunting in favour of a dip. As the name suggests, the Goliath Heron is the world’s biggest member of the Ardea family.

If you cannot find the nest or it’s too destroyed, do not try and raise a chick this young. It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. Try to get it too another family group or contact a wildlife rehabber. Never raise a wild goose or duckling yourself.

Telia watches him in half-amusement, then raises and gives a low, bull-like roar, provoking the lapwings to an excited screech, makes a few steps and lies down. The family Picathartidae consists of two very unusual birds; White-necked or Yellow-headed Picathartes , endemic to the Upper Guinea forests of West Africa; and Gray-necked or Red-headed , restricted to Lower Guinea forests of Central Africa. However this classification is no longer widely accepted, and in my opinion quite correctly so.

The species are taxonomically divided into two families: Tytonidae, Barn-Owls, and Strigidae, Owls, encompassed in one order, Strigiformes. They are also hunted. They roost and hunt, at night (mostly) when we can’t see them. Sprigs of Wolf Lichen spring from the Douglas firs, a gorgeous, almost iridescent lime green.

Thankfully, they now have a home here where they can court, build their nest, and raise their young. At night, we keep our eyes out for the passage of the neighborhood Barn Owl , oftentimes a Tropical Screech-Owl would hunt insects from a low perch on our almond tree.

Also common is the White-browed Scrubwren , a member of the Australasian warbler family. I’ve had a couple of great encounters with this species hunting lizards and frogs in the more open woodland areas, and of course it’s evocative call is a common sound anywhere there are enough trees.

This outstanding member of the wattlebird family is unique among songbirds in having different shaped beaks for each of the sexes. We’ll also keep our eyes open for several members of the New Zealand wren family. It certainly has no known relatives. Also easy to find here is the Moho , North Island’s version of the Takahe.
