The bird was a sparrow, that much was clear, but it didn’t seem to fit any of the easily boxes the other North American sparrows can be fairly easily sorted into. Superficially, it resembled the Black-chinned Sparrow of the southwestern United States with its gray chest and chestnut streaked with black back.

That’s right, I, along with my family and some really good friends, was camping. It was big, private, right next to the lake, and well-maintained. It also had nesting Gray Catbirds , fledgling Chipping Sparrows , singing Red-eyed Vireos , and a patch of jewel weed that attracted Ruby-throated Hummingbirds.

In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers. It did not take long before we had a family group of Tufted Jays right by the side of the road (KM 216) and an uncommon Gray-collared Becard at the same spot.

One of those occasions was by invitation from the San Vito Birding Club , a memorable experience I will cover in another blog post. On a recent family trip to Jones Beach, on New York’s Long Island, I had the opportunity to observe a small flock of gulls bathing, resting, and preening in some shallow brackish water that had collected behind the beach. Here are some of the best experiences of my excellent trip. A Cactus Wren nest is right at the entrance, and I saw and heard the wrens everywhere, as well as Anna’s Hummingbirds, Black-tailed Gnatcatchers, Verdin (most young, without their yellow heads yet), White-winged and Inca Doves. At least for birders.

We were at Big John’s pond and a red tailed hawk came out of nowhere and we thought he was going to fly right into the blind. On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. Wicked, right? They really appeared to enjoy this, because as soon as they swam back to the rocks they would line up again to repeat the experience. Green-and-rufous Kingfisher is the only Cholorceryle species I haven’t seen, so observing one would complete a genus in this fascinating family. It seemed like a really fun way to spend the day!

Sometimes, I’ll reply with a story about the sparrows found in a local grasslands preserve. Families do not hike up mountains to sit all day on pointy rocks to watch woodpeckers. Some of these, such as a birder’s experience finding White-tailed Hawks by driving towards the smoke plumes of a local fire, are charming.

Besides, I had only managed to get three lifers ( Gray-crowned Yellowthroat , Rusty Sparrow , and Barred Antshrike ), the first of a ton of lifers for the day, by the time I had sucked down my first cup of coffee, so it’s not like I was deprived for long. If you ever go I hope you have as good an experience as I did. What a bird!
