Fall migration was in full swing and he spent lots of time down by the coast sorting through the seabirds, sparrows, raptors, and finches. After several minutes of this deep water foraging behavior, this White-faced Ibis made its way toward me into more shallow water Posed for a little while, and then began to preen I’m glad I took the time to visit Colusa National Wildlife Refuge on this day. It could have been any of those from among the over 100 species that crossed Corey’s path this weekend but of them all he chose the singing Henslow’s Sparrow at the Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge as this state-threatened species is hard to see and it gave Corey the best looks he ever had of the species.

My second twitch, during the winter of 2011, was also in the area of McArthur where an American Tree Sparrow ( Spizella arborea ) was spotted during a Christmas Bird Count. I haven’t even been to all of the best national wildlife refuges for birding. But Northern Cardinal, Catbird, and White-throated Sparrow do not appear until the 270s, during a visit to Central Park while on business trip to New York City. Indeed, eBird tells me that I have yet to submit a checklist from approximately 20 states.

Growing up in central Oregon, allowed me to experience such a diverse amount of habitat, and the wildlife that resides there. A White-crowned Sparrow is always a beautiful subject! It is a high desert, with sagebrush flats, surrounded by Ponderosa Pines, yet we still have large waterways, for waterfowl and shorebirds.

Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. I had my first swim with Inshore Bottlenose Dolphins in Northland’s Bay of Islands back in 2000, and it was a tripy experience. Which has always mystified me slightly.

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. This past January, however, my experience was even better. And when two of those eyes are professionally trained for wildlife monitoring, that is certainly a big plus. The same can be said, to a lesser extent, for the shorebirds, New World sparrows, warblers, and many other families. Four eyes are better than two.

Great wildlife preserves, reserves and parks exist for a number of reasons. I picked up a number of striking lifers, like the Great Sparrow, Crimson Shrike, Shaft-tailed Whydah, Chestnut-backed Sparrowlark, Abdim’s Stork, Southern Pied Babbler , Purple Rollers, Black-throated Canary and my personal favourite, the Violet-eared Waxbill.
