In an interesting experiment featuring a stuffed model of a Collared Scops Owl , Crested Goshawks arrived when hearing the mobbing call of Light-vented Bulbuls that they use when encountering such a scops owl, but not when hearing other mobbing calls. On the plus side, it looks rather funny when wet.

I was shocked when I saw a hen Mallard actually incubating eggs in one of these things–they do work…and how do the mallards get in there? This also might be a way to compromise with swallows who try to build right over your home’s doorway. I used to be very skeptical of these.

I found this little grouping of Guillemots, with parents, babies and even an egg. The boat Captain got us right in close. When were visiting Smoo cave, this one was right in the cave entrance. I gave up on visiting the cave, and just watched this bird washing, preening and then jumping right in, and catch this small flat fish.

Right now it is almost all male birds, staking out territories, filling the tundra with song. Friends of mine came home from those lakes with tales of Sandhill Cranes , Snowy Owls with eggs in the nest and others. Speaking of pregnant snakes, do sea snakes lay their eggs ashore like sea turtles or do they keep them internally until the young are ready to hatch/ be born, like some sharks? I would have known this right away if I was up to date on my Alexander Skutch. Double-striped Thick-Knee nests are shallow depressions in the ground, with a typical clutch of two eggs. And, I didn’t even touch on the owls! This living ball was so small, we all thought it was a Little Tinamou, Crypturellus soui.
