This species are long living and so the population appears to be sustainable at this stage despite the predation. The parents will either defend the chicks individually, whilst the other shelters the chicks or they will both fly up at the raptors leaving the chicks hiding amongst beach debris or amongst the vegetation.

A boat ride into this swamp turns up usual suspects like Pied Water Tyrant and Yellow-hooded Blackbird , but also (and most excitingly) three species of kingfisher: Green, American Pygmy and Ringed Kingfisher. Back in 2014 we stumbled upon a juvenile Double-toothed Kite and that was the first and only time I have ever seen that species well.

There wasn’t much around, and aside from a lifer Yellow-bellied Bulbul the two most impressive species were heard not seen – a Blue-headed Pitta an a Banded Kingfisher. Two highlights of the walk back were a bright green Greater Green Leafbird and a Lesser Fish Eagle following the road above our heads.

The proprietor of our ecolodge guides my small group of birders up a steep slope where we see, just at the point where a scope view deteriorates into pixels, a huge bird—a Chaco Eagle, also known as a Crowned Eagle—on a huge nest. We are cautioned to keep the location of the eagle a secret.

We soon positioned ourselves in the shelter to watch the birdlife and there was no denying it was a hot and dry day and the shade was appreciated. Camp spot under the boabs.

Even better, at the end of the dock a large New Zealand Eagle-ray was feeding under the clear still water, and stayed there long enough for those who wanted to see it to come down. I’ve never seen so many petrels so close to shore in such sheltered waters – petrels are birds I associate with large bodies of open water.

And of course you’ll be keen to keep an eye open for Mantell’s Moa , one of ten species you should see on your tour. This species, the smallest, is endemic to North Island and should be fairly common in the wet lowland forests. The sheltered bays of the Coromandel are home to another endemic, the Southern Merganser.
