For example, it wasn’t until this year that the Mallard, with its strongly differentiated males and females and semi-migratory habits, was definitively separated from the non-migratory Mexican Duck, in which males and females are almost identical. Podicipediformes, aka Grebes, are freshwater diving duckish birds that are not ducks. And, in South America, there is at least one species that is being heavily preyed on by North American Minks which are not supposed to be in South America. These ponds and the larger Cedar Lake and collection pond hold Tufted Duck , Greylag Goose and Eurasian Moorhen. A Ringed Teal (more likely to be seen in South America than Kent) caused a stir when it followed the river downstream and showed up in Mote Park. Corvids are often associated with English castles.

There were birds to watch but they were the gulls and ducks on the river, the sparrows in the fields, the finches that came to the feeder, the beautiful American Kestrel on the roadside wire. As with related species in South America, pairs also give a loud yelping duet from the top of canopy emergents in the morning and late afternoon.

The centre had a massive balcony that overlooked a large reedy and lilypad strewn lake, which was home to fantastic birds like Comb-crested Jacanas and Green Pygmy Geese , birds so small you’d think they were small ducks.
