As we walked from the car park to the bird hide we noticed a family of Magpie Geese on the edge of the billabong. Family of Magpie Geese. The ducks were gathered in one area and included Pacific Black Ducks, Radjah Shelduck, Grey Teal, Plumed Whistling Ducks and Wandering Whistling Ducks.

On May 2nd we bush walked to an ephemeral lake approximately 55 kilometres/34 miles from Broome with my Mum, who also enjoys birds and walking, to find more ducks present than on our previous visit a couple of weeks ago. Looking across to the far side of the lake we noticed a very large duck and it was swimming close to the edge.

There are Australasian Grebes, Wandering Whistling-Ducks, Pacific Black Ducks and Little Black Cormorants present and also Magpie Geese. Magpie Geese arrived in the Broome area and bred close to the main highway and have now moved off to deeper water. On several occasions recently we have had to stop on the highway to let families of birds go across from one wet side of the road to the other wet side of the road. Several bird species arrived in Broome early in the year and have bred successfully and this has included Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Wandering Whistling-Ducks , Magpie Geese , Australian Painted Snipe , Australian Crakes , Black-winged Stilt , Red-kneed Dotterels, Purple Swamphens and Masked Lapwings. Stretching over the water, big boughs dangled their flowers below, so a passerby literally had to duck their heads to avoid the bloom. Magpie Geese were breeding close to the main highway south of Broome and so were the Whiskered Terns , White-winged Black Terns , Purple Swamphens , Comb-crested Jacanas , Wandering Whistling Ducks and Plumed Whistling Ducks. The first few years for female ducks and geese are kind of practice rounds. Sometimes females have eggs to lay but no nest and the eggs can end up anywhere from other duck and goose nests…there was even a case in Minnesota where a Canada Goose laid an egg in an Osprey nest and the raptors incubated and hatched it !
