African Pygmy Geese – Diminutive Ducks

When I read somewhere that Pygmy Geese were not actually geese at all I started doing some research. I discovered that there are actually a fair number of ducks and other waterfowl that are wrongly called geese. So any birds that don’t belong to these genera can be considered either ducks or swans or something else.

Another good year for Magpie Geese near Broome

Last year was the first year since we moved to Broome permanently at the end of 1999 that we encountered significant numbers of Magpie Geese to the area. The areas where the Magpie Geese have been breeding around Broome the past two years have been mostly inaccessible until recently due to the flooded land. Magpie Geese.

As the tide falls: an hour at Brancaster Staithe

The latter is half the size of the Grey, but with its stout beak and prominent eyes shows a distinct family likeness. Note the family likeness to the Grey Plover, with big head and large eyes Brancaster is always a reliable site for Black-tailed Godwits, but when I first arrived there were none to be seen. So yes, I needed to see this beast, this flying door, this scourge of all things’ geese, this modern Roc. The rooms are floating in a pond and the pond provides a home for a Eurasian Beaver family. Skeins of Greylag Geese completed the picture. Our eagle makes Baldy look imparfait, even a bit manqué. The omens were bad.

We were only seeing a couple of families a few weeks ago and now they appear to be everywhere you look. Australasian Swamphens beside the highway The numbers of Magpie Geese have also continued to grow every week and there have been plenty right beside the highway.

A new year, new life and new hope….

Our next stop was the Poo Ponds , where there are very few ducks now we have had some rain. We did find a family of Dollarbirds, though and it was the first time I had photographed four together! A bit further from town we soon added Wandering Whistling Ducks and Magpie Geese to the list, but no longer were there a handful of birds.

Or, a Tufted Duck or Cackling Goose. Ducks, swans, and geese may initially appear easy to identify. But, as with many avian families, the more you look, the more complicated it gets. Plate 29, Mallard and Mexican Duck. Probably a duck calendar and a map of migratory routes would help.
