The whole area has been a breeding ground for many species and depending on the time of day you can expect a wide variety of species. We were only seeing a couple of families a few weeks ago and now they appear to be everywhere you look. Sunset is currently around 5.20pm, but does not vary much throughout the year here in Broome.

The most common member of the Grebe species around Broome is the Australasian Grebe- Tachybaptus novaehollandiae and it has taken advantage of our exceptionally good Wet Season early this year and has been breeding very successfully. During breeding season the Australasian Grebe has a very distinct pale yellow patch at the base of the bill.

Or, a Tufted Duck or Cackling Goose. Ducks, swans, and geese may initially appear easy to identify. But, as with many avian families, the more you look, the more complicated it gets. Plate 29, Mallard and Mexican Duck. Probably a duck calendar and a map of migratory routes would help.

Goose : “any of numerous large waterfowl (family Anatidae) that are intermediate between the swans and ducks and have long necks, feathered lores, and reticulate tarsi.”.

Of the Central Flyway states, Nebraska alone holds out in protecting the cranes, having proven by its longstanding Festival of the Cranes in Kearney that a crane is worth infinitely more alive and purring in the sky with its family than thudding, broken and bleeding, into a cornfield. Additionally, sandhill cranes reproduce very slowly.

There are excellent birding opportunities along the highway throughout the year and the area still remains flooded from the rains over our Wet Season and it has been a breeding site for several species of birds. There were also families of Red-kneed Dotterels and Masked Lapwings. Glossy Ibis and Black-winged Stilt.

The lake was filled with families of Dusky Moorhens and Purple Swamphens (or Pukeko as we call them in New Zealand), all tending small groups of black chicks. Magpie-larks are neither magpies nor larks but are the largest of the monarch-flycatchers, and the most terrestrial of the family.

On my recent short family vacation to Miami, I was granted a single day to get out and really bird like a madman. We immediately headed to an undisclosed location where Carlos had breeding Mangrove Cuckoos staked out. En route to our next stop we slowed down next to a park and spotted the now countable Egyptian Geese.

Our next stop was the Poo Ponds , where there are very few ducks now we have had some rain. We did find a family of Dollarbirds, though and it was the first time I had photographed four together! There were several Masked Lapwings and Black-winged Stilt that appeared to be breeding and also Black-fronted Dotterel. Magpie Geese.

As well as this species you might see Black Swans , Canada Geese and of course Mallards and Mallard/Grey Duck hybrids everywhere as well.
