We pulled into the parking lot, got out of the car, and before I’d even had a chance to pull my binoculars out of my backpack, an adult eagle soared right over our heads. So we were treated to, gosh, I think a dozen birds over the course of our viewing. I swooned, too transfixed to grab my camera, and marveled at the bird’s majesty.

Apparently, the word “bulbul” derives from the Persian word for nightingale, though of course bulbuls are not related to nightingales. However, this rebranding has to be done right, and it has to be done whole-heartedly. The juveniles look a bit less distinct, and are prone to a slightly stupid facial expression.

They must be cheap and plentiful right? If you go by the media, there are a ton of them out there. It's a bad perception problem for chimps.

Of course, I’d already encountered tons of Javan Mynas mixed with a few Commons. I went right to the main pool to get a ration of Old World shorebirds. Storks are always a welcome sight, but listers cannot in good conscience count these birds, which hang out in the wetlands during the day and fly back to the zoo every night.

While it’s no longer possible to see this regal macaw soar gracefully through the Brazilian skies, to be able to worship them—even from afar at one of the conservatories or zoos—would be a dream, at last, come true. I worked with a pair of motmots at a US zoo and fell in love with their vibrant colors and unique tails. Wicked, right?

Despite the golf course, this place host all manner of birds and mammals. In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site. Yes, that’s Panama City to the right. All in all, the Radisson Summit delivered what we all wanted. Great Egret.

Of course, like many natural reserves in South Africa, Hluhluwe has the usual assortment of animals that have been ejected from European and US zoos and thus have to survive in the wild. Maybe the color inside the oral cavity would be a better field mark.

Strangely, the photo accompanying the Wikipedia entry on Collared Finchbills , Asian birds, was taken at Cincinnati zoo. I wonder what Americans would think if, in a Wikipedia entry, a Bald Eagle would be illustrated using a photo taken at an Albanian zoo. But I am grumbling a little bit about it. But it is not easy.
