Many of the pandas are kept in a kind of zoo in Wolongshan – ironically, the government apparently first asked local farmers to plant bamboo (to be fed to the pandas in the zoo) but later prohibited them from cutting down the bamboo (as it might be used as food by wild pandas). Gould’s Sunbird.

Good for animals, of course – particularly some shy mammals. Not in a zoo but in the wild, despite the fence in the background. Sparsely populated and at an average altitude of 3200 meters, it has a bit of an end-of-the-world feel to it, particularly the ranger station at around 4000 meters, where we stayed for a few nights.

While the Black-throated Laughingthrush is native to Southeast Asia, it is also kept at the Toronto Zoo and has its own web page there. However, as the zoo is (at the time of writing this post) closed due to covid, you still have to leave Canada and come to Southeast Asia to see it. Which (due to covid) you probably cannot.

Of course, the California Condor is listed as “endangered” under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and it has been famously subject to some of the most ambitious conservation efforts (including litigation ) ever undertaken for a bird. Of course, you might just refer to this bird as a bottom feeder, but that might lead to misunderstandings, as this term has another meaning, “someone who occupies or tries to advance from the lowest position in society, politics, business, etc., ” ( source ).

Apparently, the word “bulbul” derives from the Persian word for nightingale, though of course bulbuls are not related to nightingales. A small colony has even established itself at the Shanghai Zoo, though the majority of this species lives further south. A rather beautiful bulbul is the Red-whiskered Bulbul.

It would have been a lifer, a new Queens bird, and it is, of course, a wood-warbler. And everyone was out again the next day, today, including me of course, trying to find the bird. Dipping on a bird like a Virginia’s Warbler , which normally is no closer to New York than, say, Colorado, hurt. Dipping it was depressing.

We can find other ways to get him up close to birds, like visiting a local farm, getting him to responsible zoos, or just taking him out to places where other people feed birds. In 1987, only 27 were left in the wild and drastic action was taken to save the species: all remaining birds were captured, the California Condor was declared extinct in the wild, and a captive breeding program was begun, initially carried out by the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Los Angeles Zoo. Greater Rheas, a species the Germans call Nandu, are very popular in Germany and frequently kept in zoos as well as private enclosures. We have, for instance, very beautiful birds, like European Bee-eater , Blue Tit , and Kingfisher.
