There’s so much more that can be said about this group of birds but that’s the first description that comes to mind. The Prong-billed Barbet is in the Semnornithidae, a family shared with the Toucan Barbet of western Colombia and Ecuador. Barbets are odd, chunky birds with large beaks.

I have Facebook friends and belong to multiple bird related Facebook groups throughout South America. Later come photos of American Redstarts, Black and White Warblers and Swainson’s Thrushes from Colombia a sign these birds started to show up in that country. Cerulean Warbler.

This bunch of possible Costa Rican crypto birds can be grouped into four main categories: (1). Based on even more recent recordings, it seems that the birds in Costa Rica can probably be placed in the Mangrove Rail group. Two of those vocal groups are shown by birds in Costa Rica and neither of those are heard in South America.

I photographed this Guianan Cock-of-the-rock at a lek site near Surama, deep in the rainforest zone of Guyana, and my incredible experience with Andean Cock-of-the-rocks was at a display lek on the edge of the town of Jardin, in the coffee-belt of Colombia, both just incredible birds that make the heart soar with joy!
