Spring Migration on South Padre Island, Texas

So, maintaining habitat along the coastline is vital to supporting these species. Birders explore these migrant traps, which are an oasis of food, water, and shelter, to see if anything has been blown in. But I am happy to at least have had a small taste of these beloved species as they make their way to breed for the year.

Water, Water, Everywhere

It turned out to be an inspired choice, because my usual style of birding — parking at a trailhead and walking kilometers away from both my car and most other forms of shelter — would indeed have been disastrous. Instead, I was able to stick close to my car, taking shelter in it when necessary, and still see lots of birds.

Great Bowerbird bowers-Keep River National Park

The best walk for observing the rock art in the park that is accessible to the public is the Jinumun walk and it follows the bed of the Keep River to a site once used by the Miriwoong people as a shelter during the Wet Season. At other sites they will collect items of a less natural state to lure a mate.

Many escapes and introductions have taken place over the years and some species have found the warm, dry climate to their liking. Quite a few species are well-established and breeding from San Diego to Los Angeles and beyond. In particular, subsection iii seems to be the hurdle that most species can’t clear.

Foster to Fish Creek

There is a small shelter and picnic bench at this location and depending on visibility you may or may not be able to see the coast! Some species I know I will see and other species I don’t observe on every walk. They often nip back and forth onto the trail collecting food. Fish Creek train station building.

The island is something of a sometimes island, a collection of rocks with a smattering of houses that is sometimes an island among the sandy expanses of the silted up estuary and sometimes actually an island in the Irish Sea. This ruined… something… is where people shelter to seawatch. Common Redshank.
