Unfortunately for me, that special species spotted in the bay separating Hong Kong from China was Red-breasted Merganser. Cattle Egrets are thoroughly modern birds – they were among the first species to ditch mailed letters for faxes, then switched to email early, and now (at least in China) mostly communicate by WeChat. Some researchers did an experiment that among humans is only done rarely and only via mistakes made in maternity hospitals.

The new Guide to the Birds of China (John MacKinnon) has been published. This is partly due to hunting in China, where about 90% of the species winter (HBW).

In the Old World, Horned (Slavonian) Grebe breeds in a wide belt stretching from Scandinavia to Kamchatka and it spends winters along sea coasts, from Japan to China and from Norway to France, plus the Adriatic and the Black Sea (west and east of the Balkans, respectively). Here is one example. Which costed me a lifer.

It is listed as Vulnerable, as its range is rather restricted, though it has been found outside of China as well, e.g., in Vietnam, though the HBW does not seem to have read that paper yet. Some ornithologists are so desperate to add papers to their resumes that they write about new records of Black-crested Bulbul subspecies within China.

While I would not want to encourage anyone to put birds in cages, it is interesting to read about the experience of somebody breeding Black-headed Sibias in captivity. So, there are some positive aspects of Facebook being blocked in China. If you do not want to be put in a cage, it presumably helps to be a bit aggressive.

I photographed this Guianan Cock-of-the-rock at a lek site near Surama, deep in the rainforest zone of Guyana, and my incredible experience with Andean Cock-of-the-rocks was at a display lek on the edge of the town of Jardin, in the coffee-belt of Colombia, both just incredible birds that make the heart soar with joy!

From our experience the greatest risk is when the shorebirds take off in a panic flight and clip each other’s wings and several fall into the sea. The shorebirds need to consume as much as they can before they set off north with their next stop likely to be several days later in Taiwan or China.

Informed literature bears out my experience that most birds are seen singly or in pairs. melli is the Hong Kong form that visits during the winter from southern China.
