I even managed to shoot a video with hands trembling of excitement, probably a first of the species. Tommy Thompson Park Bird Research Station in Toronto had an extremely rare and beautiful Townsend’s Warbler x Black-throated Gray Warbler which was banded in April. Then we watched an adult and a chick feeding along the poolside.

Our internet research showed that somebody in Pine County had all three ( Black, Brown-capped, and Gray-crowned ) Rosy Finches on the feeders in their garden. Usually not one to chicken out, the worried and concerned looks on their faces told me not to ignore the advice. And now I did. It is also bird 2100 on my life list.

Shockingly, the Ashy-throated Parrotbill apparently is a species heavily hunted for bird fighting in Guizhou Province, China ( source ). Shame on the researchers. The other is to mention that the name commemorates Edward Blyth (1810-1873), who published the first description of the species.

When I upped my goal to some insane stratospheric level in June, going back to find things like Lesser Prairie-Chicken (which I missed) became more problematic. No, really. Misses will happen.

You can see that they forage much like chickens, eating seeds, leaves, and flowers from grasses, shrubs, and trees as well as insects. These coveys usually range is size from 27 to 73 individuals but researchers have suggested that in arid areas, larger groups are drawn to the same water source, thereby producing large, stable coveys 2.

I never researched the resort, imagining that it lacked the amenities my family wanted, but visiting for dinner allowed us to rent its grandeur without forking over the considerable room rates. In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site.

Chicken actually has just as much cholesterol as beef (about 100 milligrams of cholesterol in a 4-ounce serving) and almost as much fat. Researchers have also learned that the cancer-causing chemicals that form in beef as it cooks also tend to form in chicken.

This is a rather photographer-friendly species, staying on the same branch for quite a while and even returning to it after catching some insects – you can see this on video here and here. While the source does not say so directly, it hints that this means the species is not as intelligent as Eurasian Magpies (which pass the test).

To the birder, this begs the question: what species of birds appear in the Twelve Days of Christmas ? This gift is no doubt one of fancy domesticated chickens ( Gallus gallus domesticus ) from France, cooked perhaps in the Parisian style. However, in this case, a bit of research paid off.
