I purchased my first Sibley— The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America —in 2003. It gets very confusing when I’m trying to look at subspecies descriptions in multiple field guides (“Slate-Colored Fox Sparrow” in Sibley West, for example, is “Western Slate-colored Group” in Stokes West).

It was also when October came with cool weather and bunches of White-throated Sparrows, shy Hermit Thrushes. Bank and Barn Swallows also migrate through in huge numbers, maybe even the majority of the individuals of these common species that breed in North America. The Eurasian Collared-Dove , as Larry has already ably pointed out , has spread rapidly across North America since its release in the Bahamas in the mid-1970s. In fact, in New York State, other than a small breeding colony west of Rochester, there are very few records of Eurasian Collared-Dove.

I had been contacted by Bill at Birds & Beans Coffee, a wonderful shade-grown distributor I’d been using for a few years, to help do a breeding bird survey on a local organic farm. Barn Swallows lined up on the wires outside his cattle barn and Grasshopper Sparrows sang unseen from uncut hayfields. Pretty sweet.

Here’s a diagram, available on the Audubon site , that compares its 2000 range with its anticipated 2080 range: Only 1 percent of the bird’s breeding range remains stable between 2000 and 2080 if global warming continues on its current course. The variety of plumages that they show and the way different individuals molt at different times is interesting to me and I have stopped being surprised at seeing a small flock of ruddies with some nearly in full breeding, or alternate plumage, while others are still in their basic, or non-breeding plumage.
