When is a Vulture Not a Vulture?

10,000 Birds

I have been lucky enough to get close views of two massive Old World Vulture species, the Eurasian Griffon and the Egyptian Vulture. Here in Mexico, I can almost always count on Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures to pad each outing’s list by two species. Black Vultures are a bit smaller than all these other species.

Whooper Swans at Lake Kussharo, Hokkaido

10,000 Birds

They are ridiculously unafraid of people there – so the cynic in me suspects that swan meat is not regarded as tasty by the Japanese (another explanation, that the Japanese just like animals too much, can presumably be discarded given the country’s very principled approach in insisting on the right to kill whales).

T he Golden-throated Barbet (Baihualing, Yunnan) has an interesting species name, franklinii. Probably jazz.

Review: North on the Wing by Bruce M. Beehler

10,000 Birds

I had to work my way past this to get involved in the story and reach the meat of the matter. But like many a tough nut to crack, the meat was worth it. He addresses this task with humble determination rather than florid drama, to the point that at times I lost track of how many species he had yet to see.

Nyala, Southern Africa’s Stunning Antelope

10,000 Birds

Anyway, while there are many species that I’m always pleased to see (I’m a particular fan of the aquatic kobs, lechwe and pukus) it was only on my last visit that I saw one of the more attractive species for the first time, the Nyala (pronounced Nnya-la, not Nye-al-ah).

The Beautiful and Colorful Mourning Dove

Their habitats vary widely in both rural and urban landscapes; open habitats are preferred and the species generally shuns only extensively forested areas and wetlands 1. To show how adaptive this species is, the following photograph was sent to me by one of my readers and I use it with her permission.
