With the extent of the tall vegetation many species have been able to breed and hide for many months and now they are becoming more visible from the highway. There is ample food for many species and you can clearly see the small fish around the culverts. There are also a lot more Red-kneed Dotterels and Black-fronted Dotterels visible.

All of the nice green vegetation around these drainage channels is very popular with the Cattle Egrets and by November they have some beautiful breeding plumage. Ferruginous Hawks breed in the grasslands of eastern Montana, but they are rare in the mountains and in winter, so this bird was certainly a surprise. We concluded the days by unsuccessfully scanning a golf course flock of Canada Geese for Cackling Geese , then returned to Missoula chilly but triumphant.

The male is the only Black-necked Stilt in the second segment of this video, along with several Greater White-fronted Geese, and the third bird that comes into view in the final segment that is larger than the other two birds. The male of the species has the upper portion of the head, back of neck, back and wings all glossy black.

One lake has had a lone Australian Pelican in for several weeks and in the last few weeks there has been the arrival of Magpie Geese and numerous Radjah Shelducks. It migrates north to breed in the tundra where it nests on the ground close to shallow pools. It is easy to see its close association with other fish-catching, ‘toothed’ ducks. The females do not carry the long tail plumes and reminded me slightly of Cotton Pygmy geese. I am guessing that it is a sign of virility.

At first I dismissed them for some hybrid geese, until I recognized their JIZZ. In my homeland, some 800 km / 500 mi further north, these ducks are common on migration but very rare in the breeding season and I realized that these are my first young birds – ever. Spring (migrants and breeding species) and winter (wintering waterbirds).

This is a Salvin’s Prion ( Pachyptila salvini ) The Salvin’s Prion breeds on four islands in the South Indian Ocean, Crozet, Prince Edward, St Paul and Amsterdam Islands. Not so broad-billed.

I had a beautifull view on 5 horned grebe here (one in breeding plumage), in Ann Arbor Michigan, for the 3 seconds it lasted, until I heard a huge “CRRACK&# , and I fell through the ice. Sure, it was a lifer and an unexpected one because most of the hawks have moved further north to breed by late April but Carlos did nothing to ensure that it stuck around for better looks. It is in the interest of each member of the pair to have a good enough distance between all of the use areas that there is little overlap in space during the breeding season; thus the spread out nesting sites, which are more or less central to the territory.
